Turner-Hazinski Award Process Underway
February 23, 2018

Since 1996, The Steve and Judy Turner Research Fund in Pediatrics has been providing annual grants to support the research activities of young pediatric faculty members. It was the Turners' hope that their $1 million unrestricted gift would help propel Vanderbilt Children's Hospital as a national leader in the discovery of new knowledge about childhood medical care.

In 2006, the award, originally called The Turner Scholars, was changed to the Turner-Hazinski Award in honor of Tom Hazinski, a beloved faculty member and mentor to many pediatric researchers. The purpose of the Turner-Hazinski Award is to foster innovative, high-risk, collaborative projects that generate preliminary data which will lead to investigator-initiated extramural funds.

All applications for funds $100,000 or less per year for up to two years are considered. Applicants must be within the first five years of their faculty appointment, and the funds must go to salary support and research costs.

The 2018 application process has already begun, with deadlines noted below:

  • February 9 – Letters of Intent submitted
  • March 23 – Selected investigators submit complete proposal
  • April 20 – Funding decisions announced at Department of Pediatrics research retreat
  • July 1 – Funds available to selected investigators
