The database of clinical trials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is searchable by health topic, doctor or discipline. Children are an important component of groups of study volunteers. Until recently, between 70 and 80 percent of medications used with children were tested only on adults -- the dosage, safety and effectiveness of these drugs were never tested on children. Now safeguards are in place at local, hospital, and federal levels to ensure the safety of children enrolled in a clinical research trial. These safeguards are in place to make sure the parents and children understand what they have agreed to do and that the possible benefits of participation are greater than the risks.
