He has done research evaluating the impact of the renin-angiotensin system on the outcome of renal diseases, including IgA nephropathy. Iekuni Ichikawa, M.D.
Dr. ichikawa's research is focused on delineating the common mechanism(s) responsible for the recently conceived idea that podocyte-to-podocyte propagation of damage drives progression of chronic glomerular diseases starting at the early stages of renal disease. To obtain unequivocal answers to each of the proposed hypotheses, the PI will use inducible and cell-specific transgenic/gene knockout mouse strains designed and generated specifically for this purpose. The phenotypes observed in these mutant mice studied under unprecedented experimental conditions are expected to produce new paradigms in our understanding of glomerular diseases. Kathy Jabs, M.D.
Dr. Jabs' research interests include treatments and complications of chronic kidney disease in children including cardiovascular disease, anemia, growth failure, and outcomes of dialysis and transplantation.

Deborah Price Jones, M.S., M.D.
Dr. Jones' research interests are in cancer-related kidney disease and cardiovascular alterations among children with hypertension and/or chronic kidney disease. Within the area of cancer-related kidney disease her interests include the evaluation of renal function in children with cancer to allow accurate dosing of chemotherapy, acute kidney injury in children with cancer, and late effects of cancer and cancer therapy. In the area of hypertension, she has investigated left ventricular remodeling and arterial alterations as they relate to ambulatory blood pressure patterns in children with hypertension.

Valentina Kon, M.D.
Dr. Kon is investigating the connections between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease. In particular, she had been interested in defining the mechanisms underlying CKD-associated dysfunctions of lipid handling and inflammatory functions by the macrophage, a key cell type in development and progression of atherosclerotic heart disease. She has also investigated the relative contribution of the renin-angiotensin system on the cells within the vessel wall versus infiltrating monocytes and the role of the renin-angiotensin system in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. In particular, she is exploring this relationship in the setting of renal injury, as patients with even subtle renal damage appear to be at a very high risk of developing atherosclerotic vasculopathy. This virulent vasculopathy is even relevant to children with renal damage.  PubMed publications
