Our state-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is the region's neonatal center, pediatric center, poison center, trauma center, tertiary care referral center, burn center, and transplant center.
The pediatric ED has 35 patient care areas and two trauma bays. Our 24-hour care team includes two attending physicians, pediatric emergency medicine fellows, residents, a dedicated respiratory therapist, social workers, and child life specialists. We feel that this multidisciplinary team, specifically trained to work together to address the emergent needs of children, relieves some of the anxiety for both the parent and the child.
Our department directs the vast majority of EMS care in the area, including the city's paramedics and the region's busy helicopter transport system. We have two board-certified toxicologists who supervise an active toxicology consult service and the state's poison control center. The radiologists, who work with us in an adjacent ED reading room, excel in the art of radiologic interpretations and ultrasonography.
