Shari Barkin, M.D., MSHS, the Marian Wright Edelman Professor of Pediatrics and director of the Division of General Pediatrics, presented the keynote address at the opening session of the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Denver on April 30. Her address, "Timing is Everything: Childhood Obesity from Physiology to Public Health," examined how carefully timed actions by families, health care providers, and the community can reduce childhood obesity and improve health outcomes later in life.
"By examining the dynamic interaction between a child's external environmental exposures and his internal physiologic responses, scientists, parents, and policy makers can be informed about effectively intervening to change the trajectory of childhood obesity in America," said Barkin.
