Faculty Updates
February 23, 2018

Two Department of Pediatrics faculty transitioned to new roles on January 1, 2018.

Kris Rehm, M.D., has taken on an expanded role for the Department, serving as Vice Chair for outreach activities. She will also lead a new division to provide a home for faculty who primarily work outside of the main campus and OHO. Kris has been the founding director of the Division of Hospital Medicine, which has grown under her leadership. In her new role, she will work with hospital leadership, the department and outside partners to continue to build our services in the region and across the state. She will continue with her current roles in the Chief of Staff’s office.

Derek Williams, M.D., has agreed to serve as the new Division Chief of Hospital Medicine, replacing Dr. Rehm. Derek has already made terrific contributions in his research program, as well as his contributions to the field of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at a national level. He is an accomplished clinician, teacher and educator, and has an R01-funded research program focusing on pediatric pneumonia, for which he is an international expert. He has articulated a very exciting vision for the Division’s clinical care, teaching and scholarship programs.

Bill Walsh Retires as Chief of Nurseries

In a career spanning over four decades, with 25 of those years as chief of Nurseries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, William Walsh, M.D., has focused on caring for some of the hospital’s tiniest and sickest patients.

Along the way, Walsh has impacted policy, trained future providers and championed innovative treatments. He has published more than five dozen articles, given more than 100 invited lectures, taken care of thousands of babies and mentored too many people to count.

On May 1 2017, he stepped down as chief of Nurseries, passing the baton to Melinda Markham, M.D., who assumed the role of medical director of Neonatal Intensive Care Units at Vanderbilt. Read the full article.
