Medical Genetics and Genomic Medicine

New discoveries in genetics and genetic technologies are leading to innovative and personalized applications of genetic medicine. The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomic Medicine is committed to being at the forefront of discovery and translating our research into opportunities for better health. That commitment is founded on balancing comprehensive services that transcend genetic sub-specialties with research. We believe this makes our division distinct from other institutions.

Genetics Research

Our research projects include studies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of forms of congenital heart disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, leukemia, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, growth hormone deficiency, and scoliosis; metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria and lysosomal storage disorders; and genetics drug interactions.


The division provides pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training through:

  • ABMG accredited Clinical Molecular Genetics Training through Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology
  • Post-doctoral Research Fellowship
  • Elective Rotations in Genetics for undergraduate students, genetic counselor students, medical students and resident physicians
  • Better Outcomes of Lysosomal Disease (BOLD) Fellow, a training program for Advance Nurse Practitioners
  • Rotations in Vanderbilt Center for Undiagnosed Diseases (VCUD)

Center for Undiagnosed Diseases

The Vanderbilt Center for Undiagnosed Diseases brings together clinical and research experts from across Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the world to solve patients' most challenging medical mysteries. Vanderbilt University Medical Center is one of seven medical centers in the U.S. in the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN), a clinical research initiative of the National Institutes of Health.

Comprehensive clinical services at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and our consultation expertise have made our division the region’s primary center for a broad spectrum of genetic and metabolic services for both children and adults.
